Who Maintains Discipline in a Live Cell: Physics Perspective
Italian and Russian researchers confirmed the hypothesis that the self-maintaining order in eukaryotic cells (cells with nuclei) is a result of two spontaneous mechanisms’ collaboration. Similar molecules gather into ‘drops’ on the membrane and then leave it as tiny vesicles enriched by the collected molecules. The paper with the research results was published in the journal Physical Review Letters.

Earthquakes Can Be Predicted Five Days Ahead

Earthquakes Can Be Predicted Five Days Ahead
An international team of researchers, which includes physicists from HSE University and the RAS Space Research Institute (IKI), have discovered that, with an impending earthquake, the parameters of internal gravity waves (IGWs) can change five days before a seismic event. This data can help experts develop short-term earthquake forecast methods. The results of the study have been published in the journal Doklady Earth Sciences.

‘A Physicist Has to Be a Romantic’

Alexey Starobinsky, Professor of physics at HSE University and Fellow of the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics at the Russian Academy of Science
Alexey Starobinsky, a professor of physics at HSE University and a fellow at the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics at the Russian Academy of Science, has been awarded the Dirac Medal of the ICTP, a prestigious prize awarded annually by the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics. HSE News Service spoke with the laureate about his path to international recognition, his students, and the award.

Competition for Research Labs in Quantum Technologies and New Functional Materials: Two Weeks Until Application Deadline

We are inviting prospective experimental physicists with comprehensive work experience in the field of quantum nanoscience to participate in the international competition. The candidates should hold a PhD conferred no more than fifteen years ago. The winners will be responsible for building strong research teams that will engage in active research in relevant areas. Starting in 2022, the heads of the laboratories will also be charged with attracting annual co-financing. The winners of the competition will be hired full-time as laboratory heads at the Faculty of Physics for the full duration of the project.

HSE and Joint Institute for Nuclear Research Sign Cooperation Agreement

IBR-2 Pulsed Reactor
The HSE Faculty of Physics and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) have reached an agreement on a joint partnership. From the beginning of the next academic year, students from the faculty will be able to carry out internships at the institute’s various research laboratories.

Predictions Only Hold Scientists Back

Igor Kukushkin, Chief Research Fellow at the Institute of Solid State Physics (Russian Academy of Sciences), Professor at the Faculty of Physics at the Higher School of Economics
Together with his colleagues, Igor Kukushkin, Chief Research Fellow at the Institute of Solid State Physics (Russian Academy of Sciences) and Professor at the Faculty of Physics at the Higher School of Economics, has founded two scientific-commercial enterprises. Their products are used in a range of areas, including pharmaceuticals and medicine, as well as to control the quality of various materials and even in the fight against terrorism. Igor Kukushkin spoke to the HSE news service about how to combine science and business.
